Reverend Dr. Velma Smith is a chosen, anointed, and spirit-filled vessel for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is a prolific and powerful preacher, conference speaker, revivalist, retreat organizer and workshop facilitator. She is the President and Founder of the Daughters of the Way Mission Outreach Ministry, Inc. She earned her Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry degree from Howard University School of Divinity.
Dr. Smith is a published writer. She is also a contributing writer for the “I AM” Christian magazine in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She writes for the Gospel News newspaper in the state of Alabama. She composes and edits professional bios, books, liner notes, and reviews for web pages and press releases for many notable gospel musicians and authors. She is a composer/songwriter for BMI. Dr. Smith formerly served as an editor and columnist for “Behind The Scenes Magazine” Buffalo, New York.
Dr. Smith is featured on the “Gospel Celebrity Street Buzz” syndicated radio program of Behind The Scenes Broadcasting Company which is aired on radio stations across the country. She is the magnificent and compelling voice hosting “Dr. Val’s Gospills,” a remarkable and fulfilling segment providing biblically-based perspectives for daily living.
Dr. Smith is an associate minister and member of the Full Gospel Church of the Lord’s Missions International under the dynamic leadership of Bishop Dr. Judy Fisher and Pastor Dr. Edward Fisher, MD. Notably, she serves as an anointed instructor for the Adult Education department.
Reverend Dr. Smith was married to the late Everett Smith, former Vice President of Atlantic Records, and former National Director for Motown Records and Marketing and Promotional Representative for Be Be & Ce Ce Winans, El Shaddai, Phil Carter & SOV, Brenda Waters, Ricky Dillard, Angela Spivey and many other legendary gospel artists. She is the mother of two wonderful sons and they reside on the peaceful shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
Dr. Smith’s international mission highlights and credits are quite remarkable. She has ministered on the mission fields in Kenya, Uganda and India. She has attended numerous events with the female ambassadors of Nigeria, Africa and ministered to several African congregations in the United States. She graciously served as the guest preacher at a reception for the President-elect of Cameroon. Dr. Smith also ministered on the Navaho Indian Reservation in Monument Valley, Utah.
As a servant/leader, Dr. Smith serves as the Chairperson for the DC Local Chapter of The National Black Evangelical Association (The NBEA). Moreover, she serves on the Board of Directors for the NBEA, Chicago, Illinois and Temple Care, Inc., Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Smith is also an Eastern Regional Director for the National Black Evangelical Association. She is a member of the National Association of Professional Women.
Among her many achievements, she holds recognition for her remarkable humanitarian efforts in east Africa. She holds elite recognition of being nominated and selected for the “Who’s Who Historical Society.” Further, she was also nominated and selected for the “International Who’s Who Society.”
Dr. Smith served as a guest speaker for Sojourners and Call to Renewal, an organization rooted in the spirit of justice and prophetic biblical tradition organized by Joy Wallis, the wife of the renowned television personality, Reverend Jim Wallis.
Dr. Smith’s media credits include guest appearances on the Worship and Praise TV show on channels 35 and 56 WQPS TV, Queens, New York and Howard University’s Word of the Day TV program. She has prepared radio broadcasts and participated in Christian radio broadcast programs on stations WYCB and WJRO.
Currently, Dr. Smith is an emerging Spoken Word artist and songwriter. She is featured on the powerfully anointed CD project “What He’s Done For Me” produced by the late Clifton Dyson. She opened for Rev. Timothy Wright at the Men of Distinction/Women of Dignity awards event for Heaven 600 AM. She is working on her next CD project with Society Hill Records which is scheduled for release “Winter 2009.” Dr. Smith is a opened providing the introduction for the Maryland Mass Choir’s Live CD project.
Dr. Smith has served as a speaker for the National World Prayer Day on the Mall, Washington, DC. She has participated in ceremonies at the Washington National Cathedral, and the guest speaker and revivalist for Edgewood Baptist Church on numerous occasions, First New Hope Baptist Church, James Memorial Baptist Church, Bethany AME Church, One Way United Church of Christ, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Arlington, Virginia, Brightlight Baptist Church and many other congregations throughout the United States. She has ministered with Rev. Robin Turner at the 19 Street Baptist Church for the kairos clinics. She has also filled-in as pastor for the Faith Moravian Church, Washington, DC. She was also a guest speaker for the Gospel Music Workshop’s Maryland Chapter.
She has served as a conference speaker for Connie Welch Ministries, Potomac Baptist Church, Washington, DC. Further, she was a guest speaker for The Women’s auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention. She has ministered in San Diego, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Bedford, Va, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Chicago for the National Black Evangelical Association. Dr. Smith has preached at New Hope Baptist Church, Buffalo, New York. She has served as a Mistress of Ceremonies, teacher and preacher for the National Association of Gospel Promoters and Managers (NAGPM) for several years in Atlanta, GA. She is also on the Advisory Board of the NAGPM. Dr. Smith served as a workshop facilitator, MC and devotion leader for the 4 Annual Chicago Quartet Convention.
Dr. Smith gave the prayer of invocation for the 2009 Communication Workers of America’s (CWA) Minority Caucus. She was also the guest preacher for the CWA’s Sunday worship service.
